Questions about Register Sizes (And Where to Buy Odd Size Floor Registers)

Let’s air out a few misunderstandings in the vent cover world about sizes.

What Are Odd Size Floor Registers? (. . . And What To Do If Your Home Has Them)

Odd size floor registers (like 3 x 10 inches) are difficult to find in hardware stores or even across certain register brands on the market.

Fortunately, Reggio Register makes your non-standard or standard register sizes HVAC search feel seamless. Our online register/grille selections are available to customize and ship in a few clicks, and we’re also happy to hash over any questions or assistance you need with our free consultations.

How Do You Find the Size of HVAC Register You Have (or Need)?

Remember with sizes you see on register options: this is referring to the size of the duct hole OPENING in your floor, wall, or ceiling (never the dimensions of the vent cover itself).

No need to be a mathematician or DIY expert to measure for a proper register size—simply take out a tape measure, ruler, or yardstick and measure the width and the length of your duct opening. If an old current vent cover is already in place, be sure to unscrew it (if screwed) and lift it off to measure this opening.

Go to Measurement Instructions

Wondering which part is the width and which is the height (or length) of the vent hole you need to measure? First measure the width of the hole opening (the horizontal way); then measure the height/length of the hole (the vertical part) to get your proper W x L register size dimensions.

The width and length of your opening should match the width and length of the inside—where register goes into duct—measurements of the grille/register. For example, if the measurements of the vent hole in your wall, ceiling, or floor is 12” x 10”, order the 12” x 10” register (it’s that easy).

There is no need to measure the outside rim of the duct hole opening or the outside borders of a register cover. Another tip: always round up to the nearest inch . . . and measure twice just in case.

Don’t forget: our beautiful selection of metal grilles are already available in up to 33 cut-to-perfection standard register sizes ranging from 6” x 6” to 30” x 18” and every size in between—simply select the option you need from the pull-down tab of any pattern/design you choose.

Note that grilles are a simplified version of a register that lays or is screwed into walls, floors, or ceilings to cover either incoming or outcoming HVAC openings, but does not provide airflow alone. However, all grilles can become a custom register if you pair the grille with a matching louver. Louver assemblies are designed to fit behind the grilles to control air flow as well as increase heating and cooling efficiency.

For the standard register sizes HVAC industry, Reggio Register is proud to offer one of the widest in-stock size varieties fit for any residential or commercial space. Aside from our decorative Made to Order metal grille selection, be sure to explore our our Heritage collection (which includes an exclusive Scroll metal register or Square steel grille) or wood grilles available in 45 premium and exotic wood types.

If you don’t see the grille/register dimensions you need, our team will confirm and create a custom fit and size of register for your residence (more on that next).
